Getting To Know: Harvey Peters

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next up to take on the questions is highly-rated defender Harvey Peters.

The 17-year-old joined the club in March 2021 having previously featured for Norwich City, and has established himself as an important member of Tom Hart’s Under-18s squad this term.

How would you describe your playing style?
I’m a left-footed centre-back and I like to play forward passes into the midfield and strikers, breaking the lines to start attacks. I like to read and anticipate what the opposition forwards are going to do, and then step in with strong tackles. I also like the aerial part of the game with one-on-one duels. I look up to Virgil van Dijk - he’s the best centre-back in the world.

Favourite current Watford footballer?
I trained with the first team once and spoke to Tom Cleverley - he was great with me and a couple of the other youngsters. My favourite player at the moment is probably Emmanuel Dennis, just because of his technical ability and the way he plays with freedom. I watch Craig Cathcart a lot as well, and I’d be happy to follow the steps he has made in his career.

Biggest influence?
My parents and my brother have been hugely important. I live away, but I speak to them every night and they encourage me a lot. I was previously living at home so this has been a new challenge, but the digs have been really good since I moved in.

Favourite football kit?
My favourite is Norwich City’s away kit this season - the black and blue one. I think it’s really nice, and different to what they have had before.

Favourite boots?
The Puma Ultras are probably my favourite boots right now, with the different coloured stripes.

Favourite footballing memory?
Going along to Newcastle with the squad for the FA Youth Cup was probably one of the highlights of my career so far. I was 15 years old at the time going with the Under-18s, so it was a huge achievement.

Most talented teammate?
Sonny Blu Lo-Everton is the most talented player I have trained with at Watford - he was technically on a different level to what I’d seen before. Adrian Blake from the Under-18s is another one - he can go both ways, is technically good and beats defenders.

Favourite things to do when not playing football?
I watch a lot of football highlights on YouTube, I’m currently watching SAS: Who Dares Wins on TV, and I play a lot of FIFA Ultimate Team on the Xbox.

Best footballing advice you’ve received?
Believe in yourself. Have the belief you can go all the way and achieve what you want to achieve, and put the hard work in with it. That’s what I stand by.
