Getting To Know: Jonathan Macaulay

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next up to take on the questions is highly-rated goalkeeper Jonathan Macaulay.

Born in Sweden, the 17-year-old joined the club in February 2021 as a first-year scholar, and has established himself as an important member of Tom Hart’s Under-18s squad this term.

How would you describe your playing style?
I'm a commanding shot-stopper, who is brave. I’d compare myself to Nick Pope - his presence is always there, and we’re similar in terms of size on the pitch, as well.

Favourite current Watford footballer?
I have two: Ben Foster and Ken Sema. When I’ve trained with the first team Foster has been very welcoming and has given me some great advice on how to improve my goalkeeping and communication. With Sema, we’re both from Sweden so when I met him last we had a conversation in Swedish which allowed me to get to know him.

Biggest influence?
I’d say my parents. My mum and dad have been really supportive during my football career. My mum is always driving me to training and my dad works really hard.

Favourite football kit?
Arsenal’s goalkeeper kit from the 2017/18 season. It was a pink one and I own it. For Watford I would say this year’s away goalkeeper kit, the turquoise one. It’s a nice, vibrant colour.

Matchday superstitions?
I listen to two songs that get me going, to get me pumped up before a match. I just wake up and listen to them. The songs are a secret though!

Favourite footballing memory?
As a player, saving a penalty against Swansea City earlier this season is probably my favourite memory. I was an Arsenal fan growing up, so from a supporter’s point of view it has to be the amazing League Cup comeback against Reading in 2012. They had gone 4-0 up, but the Gunners went on to win the game 7-5 after extra-time.

Most talented teammate?
Tobi Adeyemo is the most talented. He’s a striker and his hold up play is just amazing. Any time you give him the ball he can set people and turn. It’s amazing playing with him.

Favourite things to do when not playing football?
I like to listen to music, especially stuff by Lil Baby. I also play a lot of Ultimate Team on FIFA - my team is alright to be fair!

Best footballing advice you’ve received?
You have a lot more time than you actually think, so don’t rush anything. Train like it’s your last session as well - that's a big one.
