It was a memorable day at the Nujum Sports Awards last Sunday (August 27), as Watford FC received two nominations, winning the Ambassador for Change award.

This prestigious event, hosted at Fulham’s Craven Cottage, was launched to celebrate Nujum Sports’ third anniversary and is dedicated to recognising and honouring the relentless efforts and determination of athletes, clubs and organisations that have significantly contributed to promoting Muslim inclusivity in the world of sport.

By highlighting the achievements of those who have worked towards Muslim inclusivity, Nujum Sports aims to continue to inspire and elevate, celebrating champions of the industry with a view to create a more inclusive sporting environment for all.

It was a vigorous and transparent selection process with an esteemed panel of judges selecting the nominees and award winners.

The Hornets were nominated for two prizes, the Institutional Leader award for a club or organisation that has demonstrated its commitment to supporting Muslim athletes, and the Ambassador for Change award, which is awarded to someone who has changed the way an institution or club deals with Muslim athletes and their needs.

Earning the Ambassador for Change gong, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead at Watford FC, Dave Messenger, was selected by the panel for positively changing the culture for professional Muslim athletes within their sporting environment.

Dave has played a crucial role in multiple events, including helping Watford become the first club to host two different Iftar events, hosting a Family Fun Day with the Watford Muslim Youth Centre Trust and delivering Nujum Sports Ramadan packs to Watford FC players.

On receiving the award, Dave said: “I’m thrilled to be presented with the Ambassador for Change award by Nujum Sports. I’ve learned so much about the Muslim faith from the team at Nujum and our local community partners, and I look forward to continuing the great work we’ve done together.”
