Women: Win For León & Dionissiou Debut On International Stage

Following a busy start to the international break, six Golden Girls made appearances for their countries at youth and senior level this week, including two who captained their sides.

Lucía León’s Dominican Republic picked up their first win of the Gold Cup qualifiers, with the summer signing wearing the armband in a 3-0 victory over Barbados on home soil in the early hours of Wednesday morning (September 27), moving level on points with their opposition in Group C, League B.

Olivia Clark’s Wales fell to a 5-1 defeat against Denmark in Cardiff on Tuesday (September 26), as former Chelsea striker Pernille Harder netted a hat-trick. The Hornets shot-stopper played the full 90 minutes for the second time this week, having occupied the sticks in a narrow loss to Iceland on Friday (September 22).

England Under-17s fell short in their second game against Germany on Monday (September 25), after winning the first clash last week. Laila Harbert, who scored in the previous fixture, skippered the Young Lionesses, while goalkeeper Rebekah Dowsett played the final half-hour.

Katie Reid came off the bench for the Under-19 England side as they completed a comeback draw with Germany (September 26), playing 12 minutes at St. George’s Park in a thrilling 3-3 encounter.

Elsewhere, Development Team forward Sophie Dionissiou made her senior international bow for Cyprus on Tuesday (September 26), coming off the bench as they secured their first win of the Nations League campaign.

Dionissiou, who has excelled in the youth ranks for the Mediterranean nation, came on in the 72nd minute to help see out a 1-0 victory over the Faroe Islands.
