Women: Sunderland (H) Preview - March 31

By: Watford FC Staff

Watford FC Women return home after almost two months away, and it’s a big return as they take on Sunderland at Vicarage Road on Easter Sunday (March 31, 2pm KO).

The Hornets' last home outing saw the side run out 2-0 winners over Birmingham City at Grosvenor Vale, but three defeats away from home since means Watford are six points from safety in the Barclays Women's Championship.

A return to winning ways is imperative for Interim Head Coach Matt Bevans and his side as the end of the season draws near, with your support at The Vic more important than ever.

Ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Black Cats, here’s everything you need to know…

The Match

Watford head into Sunday’s match against top of the table Sunderland looking to put a stop to their recent form. Having started the year flying out of the blocks with a pair of 2-0 victories over Durham and Birmingham City, a long break put a halt to the early year's momentum, seeing the Golden Girls fall to three successive away defeats.

A lot has changed since the last home outing, with Damon Lathrope linking up with men's Interim Head Coach Tom Cleverley as part of his staff.

This means his Assistant Bevans has stepped in to take interim charge. Katie Reid returned to Arsenal, her parent club, while injuries to both Jacqui Goldsmid and Manchester United loanee Safia Middleton-Patel has seen the arrival of Beth Howard on an emergency loan to bridge the gap in the goalkeeping unit.

The last time the sides met, a close encounter saw Sunderland race into a 2-0 lead before a late Carly Johns strike cut the deficit. The Golden Girls were unable to find the leveller as they fell to defeat in the north-east.

Sunday is a top against bottom clash which will have major ramifications at both ends of the table. The Golden Girls need you as they look to push towards safety in their fight to remain in the Barclays Women’s Championship next season.

With kids going free with a paying adult, let’s pack The Vic and get behind Bevans and his team.
