Women: Lathrope On Southampton Defeat

By: Watford FC Staff

Damon Lathrope spoke to the media after Watford FC Women lost 3-0 at Southampton in the Barclays Women's Championship.

With the Head Coach covering a range of topics, read what he had to say below...

On the result:

In my opinion I don’t think it was a 3-0 game. I’m not saying we deserved to win but I feel like Southampton took their moments, they capitalised on their moments, and we didn’t and the game just petered out and we didn’t ask enough questions the longer the game went on.

The first half performance we were really pleased with, but they scored the first goal, we switched off for a second and they score a goal out of nothing. Other than that, I’ll have to watch it back but I don’t think they had any other chances.

We feel like we had two or three decent ones at the other end, and we came in at half-time pretty positive and disappointed to be 1-0 down. We were positive that if we could go and replicate that again we could get something out of it, but it didn’t quite materialise.

On the game getting away from Watford:

I feel like there was a bit of disappointment, they scored a second through a bit of loose play from us and it just felt like they didn’t really believe that we could come back from that.

I think the players knew we were well in the game at 1-0 and then all of a sudden a bit of a blow to go 2-0 down, and it felt like a little bit too much to do to get back from there.

On looking ahead:

We can take a lot of positive moments from today, but ultimately it's about points, and we’re pretty clear on the areas that we need to get better at or add to our game in order to turn performances into goals and points.

It’s tough because we won’t have any chance to reflect on this because we’ve got the game on Wednesday and the games are thick and fast, which makes it difficult as I don’t think we’ve actually got a training session between the games.

But we’ve just had a good chat in there, so that it’s very clear what they need to do to give themselves the best chance.

On Wedneday's Continental Tyres Cup game with Lewes:

We want to win every game, because if you win games it builds a bit of confidence and belief, and we need that for sure.

It’s an opportunity to maybe try something, to try and if it fails it’s not the end of the world.

Again I’ll reiterate, we lost 3-0 but the game could have swung the other way very easily and we need to make sure that games don’t get away from us.
