Women: Durham (A) Preview - January 28

A week after the trip to the south coast the Golden Girls head north for an encounter with Durham in the Barclays Women’s Championship this Sunday (January 28, 12noon KO).

Playing out a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season, the Hornets are now on the hunt for their first points in 2024, having fallen short again at Southampton last weekend.

Ahead of the long road trip, here’s everything you need to know…

The Ground

Durham play at Durham University’s Maiden Castle Sports Centre.

Situated in the centre of Durham, the ground features a single seated stand with the rest of the ground uncovered and standing only.

If you are travelling north for the game, the postcode is DH1 3SE, with plenty of on on-site parking and an overflow car park if required, which is just a 15 minute walk from the ground.

If you are getting the train to Durham, the ground is a 30 minute walk from Durham Station, and is served by a number of local bus routes that will take you nearer to the ground, with the closest stop being Houghall College. Full details of the local transport links can be found HERE.

Tickets

Tickets for Sunday’s match can be purchased online in advance of the game or at the gate upon arrival using both cash and card. Tickets are priced at £9 for adults, £6 for students and £4 for under-16s.

The Match

Head Coach Damon Lathrope is gearing up for his 50th game in charge of the Hornets. Taking the reins following relegation from the Championship in 2022, Lathrope has guided his group of players to an immediate second-tier return and a run to the FAWNL Cup final last term.

Durham stunned the Hornets with a goal inside two minutes on the first day of 2023/24, but Carly Johns’ debut strike secured a point to start the new campaign.

Since then, Durham have settled comfortably in mid-table, whilst the Golden Girls have managed to collect just a further five points and currently sit bottom of the table, five points from safety.
