Since We Last Met: Everton

The Hornets welcome Everton to Vicarage Road this Wednesday (May 11, 7.45pm KO) in the Premier League.

The reverse fixture at Goodison Park (October 23) saw plenty of goals, as Watford beat the Toffees 5-2, with Joshua King notching three.

As we count down to the clash, here is everything you need to know about our upcoming opponents…

New Manager In The Goodison Dugout

It would be a busy January on Merseyside following the dismissal of Rafael BenĂtez, with the Spanish coach having won just once in his last 13 matches.

In response, Everton turned to former Chelsea and Derby County manager Frank Lampard to improve their form and avoid relegation, with the club placed 16th.

The ex-Blues boss put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal, overhauling the backroom staff by bringing with him Joe Edwards as assistant manager, Paul Clement as first-team coach and Chris Jones as first-team coach and Head of Performance.

Lampard would later be joined by his former Chelsea teammate Ashley Cole as a first-team coach.

Current Form

Though things looked promising initially, it was a somewhat tough start to life as manager of the Toffees for Lampard. Everton beat Leeds United in just Lampard’s second match in charge, but followed that result up with four straight defeats in the league.

In the meantime, Everton beat Boreham Wood 2-0 in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup, with both goals coming from striker SalomĂłn RondĂłn.

Back in the top-flight, they would avenge those earlier losses with a last-gasp Alex Iwobi winner against Newcastle United at Goodison Park. But after crushing defeats to Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and West Ham United and Burnley in the league, the Toffees would need to be at their very best to beat Manchester United 1-0 on April 9.

With Goodison Park behind them, Anthony Gordon’s first-half strike was enough to secure all three points against the Red Devils. Despite defeat in an engaging Merseyside derby against Liverpool, Everton have won their last two matches against Chelsea and Leicester City, and are placed 16th with a fixture in hand – a point above Leeds who currently occupy the final relegation position.

New Players

Joining the new Everton boss over the winter was Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, and Donny van de Beek on loan from Manchester United.

Dele, who had spent seven years at his previous club Spurs, made his debut in a 3-1 defeat against Newcastle United and has featured in nine matches since moving to Goodison Park.

Van de Beek played in six matches before suffering from a thigh injury which has prevented him from competing in games since.
