Reaction: Cleverley On Hull Point

By: Watford FC Staff

Tom Cleverley spoke to the media after the Hornets drew 0-0 with Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship clash at Vicarage Road.

Read what he had to say below...

On the performance:

I thought it was spirited, we looked motivated. I’ll give credit to the players, as on the face of things, we have a lot less to play for than Hull.

I said I would like to see the desire to win the game in the last 20 minutes from the first minute against Sunderland next week.

I thought we were flat for an hour, we need to go and make it happen rather than wait for it to happen.

I thought that the substitutes gave us a bit of freshness and purpose in some of our play. We just couldn’t break the door down in the end.

I think a draw was a fair result; they had less chances but probably bigger ones.

I think we get mentally a bit more comfortable the closer the game is to the end. I need to change that mentality. That is so from the first minute, we are looking to grab the game by the scruff of the neck, and make it ours from minute one, and not feel it out for as long as we possibly can and then have a big finish.

At home we need to have that superiority since minute one. It’s my job to change that.

On Daniel Bachmann's display:

Bachmann did well. He’s been excellent since I’ve come in.

He’s a top goalkeeper at this level, he has proven it at this level, he’s won promotion at this level.

People are quick to jump on which parts of the game he’s not as strong at. But for shot stopping, you won’t find a better one in this division.

The penalty was a fantastic save. I don’t know how much homework has gone into it.

He’s shown his real worth today. I knew his worth after playing with him the last few years. Not only on the pitch but in the dressing room, he’s massive for me. I know he has come under a bit of unfair criticism but we know how important he is to the squad.

We know Ben Hamer’s qualities, and Dan will probably be the first to say, that with his feet Ben is better but as a whole, I have massive belief in Dan and we are lucky to have him at this level and in the dressing room.

On not scoring:

With the quality we have in the team, any other day we score two or three.

I was very pleased with the finish and the desire to go and win the game. As I said before, we are playing against teams with bigger motivations than ours, so I was pleased to see that desire to win.

I have been really impressed with that over the past games. We have played five out of the top seven and we are making every team we play against work as hard as possible to get points against us.

Now the key is turning these draws into wins.

I’ll have absolutely no finger pointing. On another day our defenders may make a mistake and our strikers and forwards pull it out of the bag.

Over the course of the season, your level is your level as a player, as an individual and as a team. I want absolutely no finger pointing at our strikers today. They are good players that are working hard to put it right, and I’m sure they can do.

On his substitutions:

I thought Ken [Sema], Jeremy [Ngakia] and Rajo [Mileta Rajović] gave us a real purpose and more killer instinct when we did get in those areas.

We were always finishing with a cross, shot or an attempt. Before that it was very much good play, good areas, without really having that killer instinct.

On enjoying the job:

It’s my life. Some people think you’re mad going straight into it, but my life is at football, my life is at Watford Football Club. It has been for the last seven years.

I am thoroughly enjoying being such a responsible part of the team. I will give everything for the last couple of weeks of the season.
