Reaction: Bevans On Sunderland Defeat

By: Watford FC Staff

Interim Head Coach Matt Bevans spoke to watfordfc.com after the Golden Girls’ 3-0 defeat to Sunderland at Vicarage Road.

It was the Hornets who had the better of the possession for large parts of the match but they failed to turn this into meaningful goal scoring chances.

A Liz Ejupi opener and Emily Scarr brace made the difference in the second half, leaving Watford empty-handed in their final game before the international break.

Find out what Bevans had to say below...

On the performance:

Proud of the performance, disappointed with the result obviously, it wasn’t a 3-0 game in my opinion. We dominated the game in large spells and they were really sloppy goals to give away and it cost us.

On the strong first half:

In terms of the girls taking on board the information, being really brave to play, our structure was really good. We just lacked that tiny bit in the final third, and it’s cost us today.

On the early momentum:

If someone watched the game today, you wouldn’t know who was top and who was bottom of the league. The first 15, until they scored in the second half, we were in complete control. It’s really disappointing we get punished for these moments, and we’ve got to start punishing teams when they give us chances.

On Harley Bennett:

I don’t know too much to be honest, she’s gone for an x-ray. Hopefully she’s okay and we will find out during the week.

On the goals:

Really poor goals, three mistakes from us and it cost us, which is really frustrating. We asked the group in the week to work as hard as you can, give us everything that you’ve got and the rest will take care of itself, it’s just a shame with the sloppy goals.

On the remaining games:

We know how important it is, to be fair to the players, they’re giving me everything, you can’t ask much more, we need a bit of luck to go our way, stop conceding poor goals and start taking our chances, but if we perform like we did today, we’ll give ourselves every chance.
