Reaction: Bachmann Discusses Preston, Cleverley & Ipswich

By: Watford FC Staff

Daniel Bachmann spoke to the media after the goalless draw with Preston North End in the Sky Bet Championship.

The club captain discussed the stalemate and how he is finding life under Interim Head Coach Tom Cleverley, as well as looking ahead to Wednesday night's match away at Ipswich Town.

Read what he had to say below...

It was [Preston] a bit sloppy all the way through from both sides. We had it under control, [but] we weren’t clinical enough, we didn’t move the ball fast enough. Nevertheless, we looked solid at the back. It is disappointing to not win but at the end of the day it is a point and a clean sheet.

We looked very solid, we have done so the last four games, so that is certainly something positive. The Easter weekend we had the best team in the league at home [Leeds] and a team that is set for the play-offs [West Brom] away from home, and we possibly could have won both games, we were probably the better team in both of those games as well as today. But the final pass was just a bit sloppy, starting with me to be fair, just a bit of a sloppy performance all round today.

The short time he [Cleverley] has been here he has instilled a great mentality, he knows a lot of the lads because he has played with them, he has only recently retired so he knows exactly what it takes on the pitch. He gets the messages across really well, he sets us up really well, we look very solid, as well as playing good football.

It has certainly been positive, and you see a lot of the lads play with a lot more freedom and more happiness on the pitch, which automatically makes you play better.

With Tom, he has been at the club a long time, before I was even a professional footballer and I’m one of the senior players now, so he knows the club very, very well as a player but also from the coaching side because he has been with the Under-18s for the last few months.

There was never a doubt when knowing Tom, the football brain he has, and even when he was still a player, that he would go on and do well in coaching because he understands the game so well, he understands when he has to adapt, when the system that he prefers needs changing. He is just a top, top person first and foremost, and, as you can see, a good coach.

In the last few years when I was playing with him, if anyone was asking who in the team will go on to be a coach, probably 90 per cent of the team would have said Clevs, just because of the way he looks at the game, and the way he also learnt the game towards the end.

He started getting involved with coaching while he was still playing, he didn’t really play too much anymore because of injuries. You just see the way he sees the game, the way he understands the game even though he has just started, like a 17-year-old playing in the first-team in a way, and he is doing incredibly well. The lads really respect him as well as his coaching staff so it has been very positive over the last few weeks.

On Good Friday, we came into the dressing room after the Leeds game really disappointed, which is a good sign. We had just got a point against, in my opinion, by far the best team in the league, you look at the individual players they have, and they play as a team, they are the best, and we could be disappointed to get a draw.

Same on Monday [against West Brom], the fashion in which we ended up losing the two-goal advantage is just unfortunate, but that’s how football works, but nevertheless you go in and say 'that is a good performance'. It is just details that in the end, they are obviously right at the top end of the table, things maybe go a bit more for them and we were just unlucky.

We feel like we are back on track, where we are supposed to be. Preston are playing for promotion, but we felt like that we were the favourites, which is obviously a good sign because it shows we have that belief back, and that enjoyment of playing football, and the feeling we can beat anyone in the league, and that set us up well for Wednesday [Ipswich], it will be a tough game.

I’ve never actually been to Portman Road, so I am looking forward to the game. I have heard they have got a great atmosphere and matched with our away support it will be a rocking stadium. We are going there to win the game, it will be tough, but we want to win every game that we play.
