Goal of the Season

It has been a stellar year for spectacular strikes, with an incredible 17 goals scored from outside the area as we approach the final three games of the campaign.

Ten of the best have been shortlisted for the 2023/24 Goal of the Season award so before scrolling down to the bottom to vote, here’s a recap on each strike.

Goal A - Tom Ince vs West Bromwich Albion (H)

Tom Ince opened the scoring in a chaotic 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion on a filthy night of pouring rain at Vicarage Road back in September. Ince curled delightfully into the top left corner after receiving a first-time pass from Imrân Louza in a lovely Watford move.

Goal B - Matheus Martins vs West Bromwich Albion (H)

Matheus Martins levelled the scoring after the Baggies had fought back in response to Ince’s opener. Martins attacked the left-hand side of the box and cut in, before placing a trademark finish into the top right corner to secure a point for the Hornets in a topsy-turvy affair.

Goal C - Ken Sema vs Swansea City (A)

A thunderous Ken Sema strike earned the Golden Boys their first away win in 10 months as they took all three points in Swansea last November. With the game petering out to a stalemate, Sema took matters into his own hands to smash into the top left corner from the left side of the box, leaving the goalkeeper helpless and the Hornets victorious.

Goal D - Ismaël Koné vs Norwich City (H)

Ismaël Kone’s first Watford goal was one to remember as his strike helped inspire the Hornets to a brilliant comeback at home to Norwich. On a freezing night at The Vic, Watford were shellshocked at 2-0 down until Koné drilled home into the bottom right corner with great precision from well outside the area to transform the mood and ignite a mesmeric 3-2 turnaround victory.

Goal E - Wesley Hoedt vs Hull City (A)

A goal that needs little introduction, with Wesley Hoedt’s halfway line stunner unsurprisingly featuring in this year’s vote. Hoedt stood firm to dispossess his man and wasted no time as he noticed Hull keeper Ryan Allsop off his line. Looping in an effort from little inside the Tigers half, Hoedt sent the Hull defence into a frenzy and set off for the travelling fans as he helped bag an important away win.

Goal F - Edo Kayembe vs Preston North End (A)

Edo Kayembe’s fine strike was one of five Watford goals in a fabulous 5-1 thrashing over Preston North End in December. Kayembe took aim and struck through the ball, sending it swerving into the left side of the net and easing Hornets’ nerves as they cruised onto a comfortable win in a festive thriller. Edo was even in the mood for dancing as the Golden Boys celebrated a memorable afternoon in the north-west.

Goal G - Ismaël Koné vs Plymouth Argyle (A)

Koné’s second nomination of the season helped Watford earn a point in a back-and-forth thriller with Plymouth Argyle on New Year’s Day. Trailing at 2-1, Kone played a smart ‘one-two’ with Giorgi Chakvetadze on the edge of the box and curled a sumptuous shot into the top right corner, leaving the Plymouth keeper no chance.

Goal H - Jake Livermore (goal 1) vs QPR (A)

The first of a Jake Livermore brace away at QPR helped secure the Hornets an important win. The midfielder took one touch to move the ball out of his body and then picked his spot in the far corner, teasing keeper Asmir Begovic with a strike placed to perfection in the side netting. Livermore stood and admired his work, casually allowing his teammates to celebrate with him before his second effort secured the points for his side.

Goal I - Yáser Asprilla vs Norwich City (A)

The young Colombian casually and unassumingly carried the ball in from the left, before unfurling a monstrous hit which rocketed its way into the Norwich goal via the inside of the post from at least 30 yards out. Asprilla made his way over to the touchline to embrace his teammates, but despite his best efforts in equalising at 2-2, the Hornets fell to a 4-2 loss.

Goal J - Yáser Asprilla vs Rotherham United (A)

Just a few days on from his previous exploits, Asprilla produced another moment of magic to get the Hornets back to winning ways in Rotherham. In a game devoid of quality, Asprilla popped up with a moment of true class to separate the sides as the ball rebounded to him on the edge of the box from a corner. In another thunderous swing of his left boot, he hit a volley that sailed into the left side of the goal at ferocious speed to grab all three points on the road for the Golden Boys.
