News: Gentry Day For Preston Supporters

By: Watford FC Staff

Preston North End fans will celebrate their annual Gentry Day tradition during tomorrow's clash with the Hornets at Vicarage Road (Saturday April 6, 3pm KO).

Visiting supporters will be seen in suits and bowler hats to respectfully pay tribute to those connected with the club who have passed away.

In the 1970s, former North End manager Alan Ball Sr said after an away game with Plymouth Argyle: “Preston fans are the best, they’re the gentry!”

Some supporters then became known as 'the gentry' and the first modern Gentry Day was held for a trip to QPR in 2005 after the passing of one of the group's original number.

Gentry Day has never been held at Vicarage Road before, but the two clubs already share a poignant connection through John Goodall, who was a member of Preston's unbeaten 'Invincibles' team which won the double during the first Football League season in 1888/89.

Goodall, a former England captain, would go on to become Watford's first manager in 1903, and is now buried in Vicarage Road cemetery.

Watford FC looks forward to welcoming all Preston North End fans attending tomorrow's game.
