Stevenage secured a return to Sky Bet League One for the first time since 2013/14 with a second-placed finish in the fourth tier last term.

Besides promotion, Steve Evans’ charges enjoyed good cup runs during 2022/23, including seeing off Premier League Aston Villa in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

A 1-0 win at Northampton on Saturday (August 5) ensured that Watford’s Hertfordshire neighbours got the fresh league campaign off to a flying start, and they will be looking to use that momentum to claim another cup scalp back on home soil.

Previous Meeting

The sides’ only previous competitive meeting came at the same stage of the same competition in August 2014, with Watford earning progression to the League Cup second round with a 1-0 win.

Lloyd Dyer’s second-half strike proved the difference, with Diego Fabbrini claiming the assist.

Been At Both

Versatile operator Ben Wilmot came through the youth ranks at Stevenage, who he joined aged 14 and went on to represent 15 times.

After joining Watford in May 2018, the now 23-year-old made 33 apperances in all competitions - including 25 in the 2020/21 promotion season - before signing for Stoke City in June 2021.
