Loan Watch: Fletcher Helps Wednesday Earn First Point Of Campaign

Forward Ashley Fletcher came off the bench to help Xisco Muñoz’s Sky Bet Championship new-boys Sheffield Wednesday earn their first point of the 2023/24 season away at Leeds United, as several Hornets continue to gain vital playing time away from Vicarage Road.

Fletcher, 27, who scored two goals in six appearances for Watford following his summer 2021 arrival, came off the bench for the final 20 minutes of his temporary side’s fiery Yorkshire-derby clash at Elland Road on Saturday (September 2) – his seventh outing in all competitions for the Owls this term.

Though he was unable to get on the scoresheet, a 0-0 result proved enough to lift Wednesday off the bottom of the second-tier table, ahead of a home fixture against Ipswich Town next time out (Saturday September 16, 3pm KO).

Also involved in a goalless draw, defender João Ferreira made his latest appearance for Udinese in their home Serie A battle against Frosinone (September 2), alongside a string of former Golden Boys including Christian Kabasele and Domingos Quina.

In the USA, Jorge Cabezas Hurtado featured in his third match for MLS outfit New York Red Bulls, as they were defeated 4-1 at Philadelphia Union in the early hours of Monday morning (September 4). Four days earlier (Thursday August 31), the Colombian teenager had made his first start for Red Bulls, in a 1-0 loss at New England Revolution.

Back in England, young attacking duo Shaq Forde and Kwadwo Baah were both in League One action over the weekend, with the former playing 59 minutes of Leyton Orient’s home defeat to Stevenage and the latter coming on for the final 11 minutes of Burton Albion’s 1-0 loss at home to Exeter City (both September 2).
