International Watch: Hornets Compete In Busy Schedule

By: Watford FC Staff

It was another busy period of international football for the Hornets across the globe, with the break coming to a close ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Birmingham City (Saturday September 16, 3pm KO).

Versatile wideman Ken Sema featured for Sweden as Austria ran out 3-1 victors in Stockholm on Tuesday (September 12) in an important Euro 2024 qualifier. The Watford man played 90 minutes at left-back, but was powerless to stop Austria etching three goals onto the scoresheet.

Austrian shot-stopper Daniel Bachmann was an unused substitute during the contest, with the result leaving Sweden seven points off qualification with Belgium and Austria currently occupying the automatic spots in Group F.

Elsewhere, Scotland’s Ryan Porteous faced off against rivals England (September 12) in a 150th Anniversary Heritage Match at Hampden Park, celebrating the oldest international fixture in football.

The Three Lions were 3-1 winners on the night, with centre-half Porteous featuring for the full contest.

Back on the continent, Giorgi Chakvetadze was a second-half substitute as Georgia fell to a 2-1 defeat against Norway (September 12) in another important qualifier for Euro 2024.

The dynamic midfielder was brought onto the pitch with just over 20 minutes remaining in the international tie, and was unable to inspire a turnaround despite a late goal from forward Budu Zivzivadze.

Edo Kayembe’s DR Congo lost 1-0 to South Africa (September 12) in an international exhibition match, with Burnley’s Lyle Foster notching a first-half strike that ultimately separated the sides. Kayembe started the friendly before departing the field with half-an-hour left to play.
