Fletcher: “There’s Certainly Competition For Places”

Ashley Fletcher says last week’s London Colney friendlies against Millwall and Colchester provided a welcome break from what have been some intense but rewarding sessions on the training pitch.

The Hornets have now been in pre-season training for three weeks and followed up Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Millwall with two 60-minute matches against Colchester United on Saturday, which ended 2-1 and 2-0 to Watford.

“You can do all the training, all the running and the sessions but games are what it’s about,” said the striker, speaking after the Colchester match.

“I got 60 minutes today and 45 on Wednesday, so it’s decent. Millwall was a tough game and to be fair, Colchester played some good football.

“We had a few Under-23s playing who I thought were really good. There was a 16-year-old playing in the first game today so the standard of players in the Under-23s is really high and they coped really well and helped us win the game.

“All in all, it was a good week’s worth of work.”

Fletcher scored the winning goal against Millwall, his first in Watford colours, and the new signing believes there’s a great deal of strength in the Hornets’ attacking ranks.

“It’s important to get your first goal for any team, even though it’s only friendlies, so hopefully I’ll get a few more,” said the ex-Middlesbrough man.

“I should’ve had one or two more [against Colchester] but goals give confidence, so I’m delighted. There’s certainly competition for places so it’s going to be good.

“The main thing is we’re creating chances and scoring goals. That’s important for any team going into a new season.

“Every striker wants to get on the scoresheet so hopefully in the next game we’ll score a few more.”
