Five Of The Best: Watford Moments In Wales

By: Watford FC Staff

To mark St David's Day on Friday (March 1), we have taken a look at some of the most memorable Watford moments that have taken place in Wales over the years.

Sema Breaks The Duck, 2023

The Hornets headed to South Wales in late October 2023 with what can only be described as a dismal away record. The side had only one once away from Vicarage Road in the calendar year, coming on January 2 against Norwich City.

A 1-1 draw last time on the road, also in Wales, against Cardiff City, ended a run of back-to-back defeats away, with the Hornets looking to use this as a platform to finally pick up that elusive win.

In the end, one moment of magic at Swansea City from King Ken Sema, who smashed the ball into the top left corner with fewer than 10 minutes left, earned a first away win in 295 days, giving those fans who had made the trip to Wales something to shout about.

Set-Piece Stunner, 2021

Unfortunately, this memorable moment in Wales took place without any Watford fans present to witness it with their own two eyes.

With the game at the Cardiff City Stadium played behind closed doors as a result of Covid restrictions, the match looked set to end a point apiece after Nathaniel Chalobah quickly cancelled out Francisco Sierralta's first-half own goal.

However, a foul on the edge of the box saw Adam Masina step up for a last-gasp free-kick, with the left-back firing his effort past the keeper for the Hornets' first direct free-kick goal in 1,778 days, sending Watford-supporting living rooms everywhere into delirium.

He’s Magic You Know, 2019

The Hornets' previous trip to the Cardiff City Stadium before Masina's magic moment saw another player produce a special display that will live long in the Watford history books.

Heading across the Severn Bridge for a game under the Friday night lights, Watford put on one of those displays that won't be forgotten in a hurry.

Gerard Deulofeu scored Watford's first Premier League hat-trick with three exquisite strikes, before Troy Deeney's quick-fire brace saw the Golden Boys earn a 5-1 win, their biggest away victory in the Premier League.

Limbs, 2017

Another Premier League trip west needed a reaction from the Hornets, after a positive start to the season had been put on ice by a 6-0 thrashing at home to Manchester City.

The response looked to be lukewarm at best with Andre Gray's early strike at Swansea City cancelled out in the second half by Tammy Abraham, until substitute Troy Deeney intercepted a weak pass, sending Richarlison away in the closing moments.

The Brazilian drove towards the box, taking the ball past Alfie Mawson before smashing his effort in off both Lukas Fabianski's glove and the crossbar for all three points, sending the travelling support into raptures.

Going Up, 2006

Few Watford fans would have been optimistic enough to book a hotel in Cardiff for play-off final weekend at the start of the 2005/06 season, not least following a poor showing the previous campaign that saw safety secured with just two games to go.

In spite of all odds, the Hornets, led by Aidy Boothroyd, earned a place at the Millennium Stadium that day, having finished third in the league, and easily dispatched Crystal Palace in the play-off semi-finals.

A good season became great with one of the best days in Watford history thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 win against Leeds United in the final, securing promotion to the Premier League with Jay DeMerit and Darius Henderson on the scoresheet, along with an own goal.
