Five Of The Best: Watford FA Cup Fourth Round Wins

By: Watford FC Staff

Watford welcome Southampton on Sunday (January 28, 2pm KO) in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup as the Hornets look to progress into the fifth round for the first time since 2019.

As Valérien Ismaël’s side finalise their preparations for the fixture, here’s a reminder of five of the Hornets’ most memorable victories at this stage of the world's oldest cup competition over the years.

Charlton Athletic 0-2 Watford, 1984

The first entry on this list saw Graham Taylor's Hornets take a step closer to Wembley after overcoming difficult opposition away from home in the form of the Addicks.

Watford took the lead through Mo Johnston, and secured safe passage thanks to an effort from George Reilly in front of more than 22,000 fans in South London to set up a fifth round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Watford 1-0 West Brom, 2003

The Hornets headed into their home fourth round tie against the Baggies having finally picked up a win in the third round, following five consecutive exits at this stage before the 2-0 win away at Macclesfield.

A fixture against Premier League side West Brom awaited Ray Lewington's men, with a late Heiðar Helguson goal ensuring safe passage to the fifth round. The side would go on to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 1987.

Watford 4-3 Crystal Palace, 2009

The Hornets made it successive cup wins at Vicarage Road by prevailing in this seven-goal thriller against the Eagles, in a game of late drama that meant the scoreline seemed a lot closer than it perhaps should have been.

Watford raced into a two-goal lead thanks to efforts from Jay DeMerit and Jack Cork, and bounced back from Clint Hill's effort to make it 4-1 through Will Hoskins and Grzegorz Rasiak. Two late goals created tension, but the Golden Boys held on to put their name in the hat for the next round.

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Watford, 2016

The Hornets travelled to the East Midlands looking to make it past the fourth round for the first time since 2009, and came up against a Nottingham Forest side sat 11th in the Sky Bet Championship.

Nordin Amrabat came in for his first start since signing, but a game of few chances ensued. A replay was looming, before substitute Odion Ighalo smashed home from close range for his 15th goal of the season to earn progression for Quique Sánchez Flores' men.

Newcastle United 0-2 Watford, 2019

The most recent entry on this list sees a game that might have got the most optimistic of Watford fans starting to believe in a cup run, but few could have imagined a day out at Wembley as a result.

A long trip up north saw Javi Gracia make lots of changes, much to the annoyance of a certain pundit, but they still earned a place in the fifth round thanks to goals from Andre Gray and Isaac Success in an all-Premier League clash.
