My Hometown: Daniel Bachmann

By: Watford FC Staff

In the ‘My Hometown’ series, the Golden Boys reflect on their humble beginnings, lifting the lid on what’s special about the place they call home.

First up is goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann, who hails from Winzendorf-Muthmannsdorf in Austria...

How would you describe your hometown?

It’s a small village with about 2,000 people. It’s in the countryside and it’s not far from Vienna, so you get a bit of peace and quiet and the mountains, but the city is still nearby.

Everyone knows everyone really, so it feels homely and local. I left quite young to move to England, but I spent a lot of time playing football in Vienna.

Traditional dish?

Wiener schnitzel is a classic Austrian dish. I don’t really eat it anymore, but I had one when we went to Austria on the pre-season tour last summer. It was very nice!

Drink you’d have with it?

Beer is very Austrian, so that would be the ideal choice! Where I’m from, everyone loves beer. There is also an alcoholic apple juice people like over there, which we call Most.

Favourite restaurant?

It’s hard to name just one place, because there are lots of restaurants that serve good, local food. A lot of them are like the pubs we have in England, but a bit posher.

Sight you have to see?

There is loads to see if you travel up to Vienna. Schönbrunn Palace is really famous, and Schönbrunn Zoo is one of the oldest in the world. There is also the Wiener Riesenrad, which is a Ferris wheel and one of the main sights in Vienna, and the city centre is just really nice to walk around, too.

If you could introduce a visitor to one person?

I’d say David Alaba, for the football fans, or maybe Arnold Schwarzenegger. They are both hugely famous in Vienna.
