Getting To Know: Albert Eames

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next to take on the questions is highly-rated defender Albert Eames.

The 17-year-old, who has risen through the ranks since joining the club at the age of nine, is a first-year scholar who features regularly for Charlie Daniels’ Under-18s side.

How would you describe your playing style?
I’m a right-back who likes to attack and defend. I try to prioritise defending and bringing others into the game. Attacking is a bonus and I try to get crosses into the box.

Your footballing idol?
Even though I’m a full-back, I really like Sergio Ramos. His leadership qualities, aggression and passion are something that, when I’m playing, I try to take into my own game. I remember watching him during his time at Real Madrid especially.

Biggest influence?
Both of my parents have been really important throughout, but my dad has taken me up and down the country since I started playing. Without his encouragement and advice, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He has helped me get to this level.

Most talented teammate?
I was lucky enough to play with Jack Grieves last year. I feel like whenever he is on the pitch, he is a player that can make something happen. He will either score or bring other players into the game.

Favourite football memory?
I scored against Tottenham Hotspur a few seasons ago in the last 10 minutes, and the celebrations were quite something! I got into the box, the ball got crossed into me, I hit it on the half-volley and it went in. As a supporter, I got to witness Arsenal win the FA Cup against Chelsea in the Chelsea section. That was pretty special.

Your aims for the future?
I’d love to be a professional footballer, and I’m working really hard to make that a reality. I’ll keep pushing, listening to my coaches and hopefully it will work out.

Best advice you’ve received?
Always stay humble and honest, and never stop working hard on your game. That advice has always stuck with me. It was from my scout Jason, who scouted me at Under-8s level. I still speak to him today.

Your job if you weren’t a footballer?
I’d still be involved in the sport if I’m honest, probably on the media side as a sports journalist.

How would you rate yourself on FIFA?
Pace: 84 - I’m not the fastest, but I’m not the slowest!
Shooting: 77 - I don’t get that many chances in games, but in training I score a few.
Passing: 85 - As a full-back, I get to play a variety of passes. I’m always trying to pick out a teammate.
Dribbling: 83 - I dribble a fair bit with the ball.
Defending: 87 - It’s my main priority!
Physicality: 83 - I’m not the strongest, although I can definitely hold my own.
OVERALL: 86
