OTD: Sir Elton John Performs ‘Back For Our Future’ Concert (2005)

By: Watford FC

With just over two weeks until Sir Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour heads to Vicarage Road, it’s time to reminisce about another of Watford’s Honorary Life-President’s concerts that took place at The Vic on this day in 2005.

Dubbed the ‘Elton John’s Back For Our Future’ concert, the gig helped raise funds to support the football club, who had faced financial turmoil in the years prior due to the collapse of ITV Digital.

A sea of Hornets supporters and Sir Elton enthusiasts spread across the stands and the pitch 17 years ago - mostly following his yellow dress code - as the former Chairman and global megastar played to 23,000 inside the stadium of his beloved Watford FC 31 years after his last performance at the ground.

Raising over £1 million, Sir Elton played a two-and-a-half-hour set with all of the classics, including Rocket Man, Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting and Your Song, with the latter’s lyrics now adorned on the stand dedicated to the singer.

Sir Elton returned to play a third time at Vicarage Road in 2010, and will be back for the final time in July for two special dates, which you can find out more about HERE.
