Narrow victory for young Hornets in UCL friendly

Under-23s | Watford 1-0 St Albans City

Watford’s Under-23 squad registered their first win of pre-season with a 1-0 win over St Albans City at London Colney on Saturday (July 22).

A game that was played in driving rain throughout produced chances aplenty but the match was settled by a solitary strike in the first-half from one of four Hornets trialists.

Watford created early openings that saw a trialist have an effort parried and Michael Folivi and Brandon Mason go close, but it was the visitors who had the better chances.

Nathan Gartside made a smart save to deny Zane Banton, Tom Gardiner headed over when well placed and Hornets skipper Joy Mukena blocked Percy Kiangebeni’s close range shot on the line.

So it was somewhat against the run of play when Watford went ahead on 32 minutes. Dion Pereira was the creator with a slide-rule pass into the path of a trialist who finished into the bottom corner.

The open nature of the encounter continued in the second-half but this time it was the Hornets who should have added to the scoreline. Folivi hit the post from a Mason cross, Alex Jakubiak fired wide from 15 yards and Harvey Bradbury had two good opportunities, first heading over the bar and then, after intercepting a poor back-pass, being denied by City keeper Dean Snedker.

The Conference South side found it harder to create chances in the second 45 minutes and the young Hornets held on to claim the victory.

HORNETS: Gartside (GK); Sesay (Eleftheriou 45), Mukena, Trialist (Huja 45), Mason; Charles, Trialist (Stewart 45); Pereira, Trialist (Jakubiak 45), Trialist (Bradbury 58); Folivi
