Under-23: Spencer-Adams Signs

Former Arsenal defender Bayli Spencer-Adams has joined Watford’s development squad on a one-year deal, with the club holding the option on an additional 12 months.

The 18-year-old centre-half, who left the Gunners earlier this year and has also previously played at youth level for West Ham and Tottenham, is the latest Under-23 recruit ahead of the start of the 2019/20 season.

“I’m buzzing to be here,” said Spencer-Adams, speaking to watfordfc.com.

“Watford is a really great club that pushed for Europe and got to a cup final last season, as well as playing a lot of young players, so it’s good to get this opportunity with a Premier League club.

“I’m a strong, physical defender who likes to get stuck in. I’m also comfortable on the ball and with my feet and I like to be a leader who communicates with my team.

“My target this year is to hopefully train regularly with the first-team and maybe make a few appearances on the bench, and eventually I’d like to break into the first-team.”

Pre-Season: Players Report For Duty

The first-team squad returned for pre-season training today eager to start laying the foundations for a second full season under Head Coach Javi Gracia.

The players have been off since the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City and enjoying well-deserved breaks in different corners of the globe, but they regathered at the club’s training base in London Colney this morning for a series of physiological and then physical tests.

Gracia’s strength and conditioning team are again putting the players through their paces and seeking to establish a core level of fitness that will enable them to execute the Head Coach’s high-energy game plan.

Fresh from signing a one-year contract extension, Heurelho Gomes has reported for his sixth pre-season with the club and expects this one to be the hardest yet.

“I think I'll need a day off during the week as it’s not easy,” joked the goalkeeper. “Every year it gets even harder for me. I find it easy on the pitch but day in, day out it is hard.

“I need to be focused and I’m prepared. I feel I’m in the best shape of my career. I look after myself well and I want again to do my best for this club.”
