William Troost-Ekong completed a permanent transfer to Watford in September 2020.

The centre-half - who is a regular in the Nigeria squad and has captained the Super Eagles on multiple occasions - had spent the previous two years in Italy with Udinese, playing 66 times for the Serie A side following his arrival from Turkish Süper Lig outfit Bursaspor in 2018.

Born in the Netherlands, he began his senior career in the Eredivisie with Groningen and Dordrecht before spells in Belgium and Norway, with Gent and Haugesund respectively.

Troost-Ekong - who was well acquainted with Watford before his move thanks to his Hornets-supporting father-in-law - made his debut for the club in a 1-0 win at Derby County in October 2020, and scored his first goal in yellow in a 3-2 win against Coventry City the following month.

He ended his first season at Vicarage Road with 33 appearances in all competitions as the Golden Boys earned promotion to the Premier League, and featured a further 17 times in the top-flight during 2021/22.

After making 15 Sky Bet Championship appearances in the first half of 2022/23 - and famously scoring against rivals Luton Town in a 4-0 win - Troost-Ekong joined Italian side Salernitana on loan in the January window, going on to net once in nine Serie A games.
