Watford completed a new club record transfer when highly sought-after Senegal international Ismaïla Sarr arrived at Vicarage Road from Rennes on deadline day in August 2019.

The exciting attacker started out with Metz before earning a move to fellow Ligue 1 side Rennes in 2017. He scored 18 goals in 77 games over two years at Roazhon Park - including some eye-catching displays against Arsenal in the Europa League - while he also won the 2018/19 Coupe de France.

During his debut season in Hertfordshire Sarr scored six times, including a brace in the memorable 3-0 win against runaway champions Liverpool, ending the Reds’ unbeaten run in style.

Sarr won Watford’s Player of the Season award for 2020/21, scoring 13 goals as the Hornets won an immediate promotion back to the Premier League from the Sky Bet Championship.

After scoring five goals in 22 top-flight games during 2021/22, Sarr featured 39 times back in the second-tier the following campaign, netting on 10 occasions. A home clash against Swansea City in October 2022 would see him reach the 100-match milestone for the Golden Boys, while his impressive long-range strike against West Bromwich Albion two months earlier would go on to be crowned the EFL Goal of the Season.

Internationally, Sarr made his senior Senegal debut against Namibia in September 2016, before appearing three times at the 2018 World Cup and playing regularly throughout the Lions’ run to the AFCON 2019 final.

He then played a key role in the latter stages of the 2021 edition of AFCON - held in 2022 - as Senegal won the competition for the first time, while in the same year he made four appearances at his second World Cup, in Qatar.
