A converted full-back, Duncan Welbourne joined Watford from Grimsby Town in November 1963.

Welbourne went on to break several club records, including most appearances for the club (that has subsequently been beaten by Luther Blissett), having made over 400 appearances for the club.

Welbourne achieved an exceptional unbroken sequence of 280 football league appearances for the Golden Boys, demonstrating his consistency and fitness. Welbourne’s abilities were not limited to defensive duties with the full-back often chipping in with his fair share of goals, including six in the 1966/67 campaign.
