“We Can’t Feel Sorry For Ourselves”
With six away defeats on the bounce and a difficult looking trip to Premier League champions Chelsea tomorrow (Mon May 15, 8pm), Adrian Mariappa says the Hornets know the importance of being at their very best at Stamford Bridge.
Asked by the press about Watford’s poor recent form on the road after Friday’s defeat at Everton, the defender said: “It’s something we have to look at and we have a tough away game again on Monday, so we’ve got to dust ourselves off.
“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, we need to put in another performance and try and get some points.”
Chelsea enter the game fresh from sealing the title with victory over West Brom on Friday, and Mariappa dismissed any suggestions Antonio Conte’s men might mentally soften their approach to the fixture having already won the league.
“I can’t see them stepping off, to be honest. We’ll prepare well and we know they’re a very good side, so we won’t be thinking about them stepping off their game,” he said.
“We know we need to be on top form to come away with a result.”
Pressed on the quick turnaround between trips to Merseyside and west London, Mariappa’s response was simple: “We just have to prepare right.
“The turnaround is what it is – you have shorter turnarounds around Christmas time so everyone’s professional enough to recover right and get ready for the next game.”
