My Matchday: Ben Foster

The Golden Boys talk us through their matchday rituals, routines & habits.

MY DIET

It’s all changed now because we have nutritionists who keep an eye on what we can eat. For years if it was a home game I used to have an Indian or a Chinese on a Friday night and then a bacon sarnie on the Saturday morning and that wouldn’t make much difference to me, being a goalkeeper, but now it’s not quite the same!

MY JOURNEY

Everyone has pretty much got their own specific seat so obviously me being new this season you kind of just sit where there’s a space really. I’m now opposite Kabasele and Gomes.

MY PRE-MATCH

Once we get to the stadium I get changed quickly and go and get a rub down for about 20 to 30 minutes. After that it’s the usual stuff, get stretched, get a bit of activation done and then before you know it you’re out doing the warm-up.

MY MUSIC

When I was younger I’d listen to whatever was current but now I don’t get anywhere near the speakers, so I just have to listen to whatever the lads put on.

MY KIT

Normally I cut the sleeves off my goalie top and wear the same colour skin underneath it. I prefer that as it’s a little bit freer around my arms and forearms.

MY SUPERSTITION

I used to have all the usual ones like putting my boots and gloves on left then right and all that, but I can’t be bothered with it anymore.

MY BOOTS

When they’re a new pair I’ll cut the laces and then get a lighter and burn the ends, so they don’t fray. I don’t do anything out of the ordinary with them, I just wear the same ones each match.

MY POST-MATCH

It doesn’t change whether we win, lose or draw, I’ll just go out for dinner in the evening and see my family.
