Mazzarri | “I Am Very Proud Of My Team”
Walter Mazzarri was proud of his team’s efforts despite ultimately being edged in a thrilling contest against the Premier League champions.
Chelsea needed an 88th-minute Cesc Fàbregas winner to defeat Watford 4-3 at Stamford Bridge last night, and the Hornets’ Head Coach was pleased with the performance despite missing a number of key players through injury.
“I am very proud of my team,” said Mazzarri after full-time.
“We had four starting XI defenders out injured, but with all this we still did well.
“We played very well and we are using these games to assess for next year.
“There were some positives and some not so, but it was a good game and we are still evaluating for next season.”
On another occasion, Mazzarri felt Watford might have got more from a game which was finely poised at 3-3 going into the final quarter-of-an-hour.
“When a manager loses a game like this they say he’s unlucky,” he reflected.
“There were two fouls [in the build-up to the winner] on Cleverley and Capoue which penalised us.
“We were also unfortunate as we could have scored with Behrami and Janmaat before then.
“I felt in this moment we could have won the game, but these episodes made us lose it.”
With Premier League safety now secured, Mazzarri was keen to reiterate his satisfaction at delivering what will be a third consecutive season of top-flight football to Vicarage Road in 2017/18.
“The most positive thing is that we had 40 points with six games remaining and many injuries,” he said.
“We have four defenders injured and we still played how we did today.”
