Mariappa | “You Have To Earn It”

Adrian Mariappa wasn't looking for sympathy after Watford's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Millwall in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The defender, who made his second Hornets debut at The Den, believes the players didn't respond to the challenge posed by the League One side.

“You know what kind of game it's going to be when you come here,” he told the watfordfc.com Match Review.

“Today, I don't think we stood up to it. They deserved to beat us on the day.

“The FA Cup is what it is, anyone can beat anyone and you can't just turn up on the day and expect to win. You have to earn it, we didn't today and they did.”

Mariappa conceded that it was a disappointing way to mark his return to action, but says the players must now put in a shift on Tuesday evening at Arsenal in the Premier League for the fans' sake.

“I've been waiting a long time, I didn't get the opportunity and then picked up the injury so it's nice to get back on the pitch, even if it wasn't the result and the performance I wanted to come back to.

“A performance [at Arsenal] first and foremost is what we need. The support has been tremendous, it always has been since I've been here, the fans are second to none. We're gutted for them.”
