HOLEBAS: “A Special Day For Me”

THE HORNETS progressed to the Quarter-Finals of this year’s FA Cup thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leeds United, and Jose Holebas was delighted with the application shown by his team-mates.

The Greek international was named Man of the Match thanks to a solid performance at left-back, and while admitting his delight at the recognition, he insists he was even more pleased that the team progressed.

“I have to say I’m very happy with that [the MOTM award] as I try all the time to give my best and that’s what I’m doing,” he told watfordfc.com

“I’m happy the most that the team won though, as that was the objective at the beginning of the game.

“Since the Chelsea game I haven’t been playing and it’s been difficult for me as I haven’t had any rhythm, so today was a special day for me, especially as we won the game.”

The only goal of the afternoon came courtesy of a second-half own-goal by Leeds defender Scott Wootton, but Holebas believes the Golden Boys’ performance warranted more.

However, he was also keen to praise the defensive performance from the Hornets, who kept their third consecutive clean sheet in this year's competition.

“For me, we created some chances but in the end the final pass or shot was missing and we have to work on this," he admitted.

“Defensively we were excellent and I have to give them a lot of credit, but I also have to say that we did very well, especially in the first-half, and then the own-goal happened.

“Perhaps we also should have scored two or three more and made the game even easier for us.”

The draw for the Quarter-Finals takes place on Sunday evening (Feb 21), and Holebas believes the Hornets have nothing to fear from any teams left in the competition.

“We don’t have to care as we have nothing to lose and we have shown we can compete with every team in this league,” he said.

“We just have to respect every team.”
