Karnezis and Carrillo book place in World Cup qualifying play-offs

Internationals | Play-Offs For Watford Duo

Goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis kept a clean sheet for Greece as they defeated Gibraltar 4-0, a result which secured a World Cup qualifying play-off place.

It was the 32-year-old’s fifth shut-out over the course of the World Cup qualifiers as Greece finished second in Group H, two points clear of third-placed Bosnia and Herzegovina and nine adrift of leaders Belgium.

On the other side of the globe, André Carrillo was a part of the Peru team that managed to set up a World Cup play-off with New Zealand next month following their 1-1 draw with Ecuador.

The winger was substituted just after the hour mark for Peru, who are bidding to qualify for their first World Cup finals since 1982.

Daryl Janmaat was a 71st-minute substitute as the Netherlands defeated Sweden 2-0 in Group A. The victory wasn’t enough to see Holland reach the play-offs, however, and they will play no part in next summer’s World Cup for the first time since 2002.

Christian Kabasele was an unused substitute as Group H table-toppers Belgium defeated Cyprus 4-0, whilst goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann also remained on the bench for Austria’s 1-0 win over Moldova in Group D.
