Heurelho Gomes on his penalty save & Monday's Palace point

Gomes | “It Was A Very Strange Game”

Heurelho Gomes saved his ninth Premier League penalty on Boxing Day, helping the Hornets to a hard-fought point against Sam Allardyce's Crystal Palace side.

The Watford stopper guessed correctly to save Christian Benteke's low penalty in the first-half at Vicarage Road, and admits that if the Belgian's penalty did go in, it could have been a very different afternoon for Mazzarri's men.

“It was good to make the save and important as well,” the Brazilian told watfordfc.com after the match.

“I conceded the penalty so I had to deal with it. I believe it was the key point in the match and if they scored then it would have been very difficult to get back into the game.

“A one goal difference is much easier so it was important to make the save.”
