Gray: “Everyone Is Ready And We Showed That”

Watch Andre Gray's post-match interview above, or read on below.

Andre Gray opened the scoring for Javi Gracia's side at Newcastle in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon. It was a good team performance after 11 changes were made, but a particularly pleasing one for Gray, who had just returned from a spell on the sidelines.

The Wolverhampton-born forward was happy to get the win, though, first and foremost.

“It was a great day, and obviously it’s a long journey for the fans, so I’m glad we could come away with a good win and a good performance,” said the striker. “It’s been a frustrating time, it [the injury] came at a bad time around Christmas with a lot of games.

“But, it’s part of the game and I just kept myself fit and tried to make an impact today, get my goal and I managed to do that.”

Getting back into the rhythm of your game after time out can be difficult, but Gray steadily got more involved in play as the game went on - particularly in the second half, as he started to dove-tail well with Will Hughes, who set-up his 61st minute opener.

“I had chances before that, where I got put off a little bit by defenders and put it over the bar,” said Gray. “It was the same situation again but it was a case of once I get inside the area to get my shot off.”

Some outside the club might perceive making 11 changes as fielding a much-weakened side, but highly competitive performances against Reading and Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, and Woking and Newcastle in this competition suggest otherwise.

“I think it shows the strength in depth we’ve got in our squad,” said the forward. “The manager has made 11 changes from the last game, we’ve all come in and I feel like we stepped-up and took the game to a good team and came away with the win.

“I think everyone is ready and we showed that today.”

The draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup takes place tonight (Monday January 28), and Gray is already starting to dream of an extended run in the cup.

“If you get a good draw in the next game and win that, then you’re in the quarter-finals, and who knows what can happen from there,” said Gray. “Whoever we get, we’re ready.”
