Fresh from re-signing for the Hornets, watfordfc.com takes a look at Gerard Deulofeu's story so far...
Born in Riudarenes in Catalunya, Deulofeu rose up through the youth ranks at Barcelona after moving to the Catalan capital from Girona at the age of nine.
His form in loan spells with Everton and Sevilla - where he was part of the squad that won the Europa League in 2015 - saw him progress through the Spanish youth sides, too, captaining the Under-21s.
He made his senior debut for Spain in May 2014 as a substitute against Bolivia. His last cap for La Roja came in September last year, when he assisted a goal after coming off the bench in an 8-0 drubbing of Liechtenstein.
A permanent move to Everton saw the winger get a greater experience of English football. But Deulofeu eventually returned to Barcelona in July 2017, after a successful loan stint at AC Milan where he made 17 league appearances, scoring four times and assisting three goals in his time there.
However, 17 outings in all competitions for Barça during the first half of 2017/18 was not enough for the winger, so with a view to getting more regular game-time, Deulofeu opted to join the Hornets on-loan for the remainder of the season in January 2018.
The Spaniard instantly impressed in a lively debut away to Stoke City, even though the game ended goalless.
His home debut went down as one of the highlights of the season - a 4-1 victory over champions Chelsea at The Vic - with Deulofeu scoring one wonderful solo goal and assisting another.
His playing time was cruelly cut short though, after suffering a metatarsal injury in the home win over Everton at the end of February.
But, despite that setback the forward worked hard on his recovery and eventually made his return in the final three games of the season against Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Manchester United.
The winger then decided to stay with the Hornets, signing permanently on a contract until the end of the 2023/24 season.
