Over and out

The Hornets will be disappointed to bow out of the Carabao Cup tonight, but return to Vicarage Road on Saturday looking to bounce back against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.

Tonight's attendance was 9,003, thanks for your support throughout.

10:20 PM

Silva on Carabao Cup defeat

Watford Head Coach Marco Silva spoke to Sky Sports' Dickie Davies after tonight's defeat to Bristol City:

"Many things [went wrong].

"In the first half we controlled match but were too slow against a team waiting for our mistakes.

"The second half started well. We score a goal but then we have too low intensity and rhythm and it unbalances the match.

"We conceded two goals from transitions. Then we play with our hearts and not our minds.

"It's not about the changes. They made more. It's about the low intensity."

10:00 PM

“I've got mixed emotions” - Hughes

Watford debutant Will Hughes spoke to after the final whistle:

"It's very frustrating, these sort of games can catch you out, and I thought tonight it did exactly that.

"As soon as we went 1-0 up we got complacent and perhaps took our foot off the gas a bit. We can't do that in these sorts of games.

"I've got mixed emotions as the result is the main thing, so that put a dampener on the evening for me, but at the same time it was nice to get a start and get some minutes under my belt.

"We weren't good enough overall tonight and the result shows that, but we've got to move on and dust ourselves down."

FULL-TIME: Watford 2-3 Bristol City

Despite their best efforts, Watford went down to a hard-working Bristol City side who came from behind to win the game.

A largely uneventful first half was followed by a goal from Étienne Cpaoue immediately after the break, but the Robins then scored twice in seven minutes after the hour, through Freddie Hinds and Bobby Reid.

Marco Silva's men threw everything forward in search of a late equaliser and the prospect of extra-time, but City then hit them on the counter and sealed their win with a third goal coming from Niclas Eliasson in the 93rd minute.

Adrian Mariappa then scored a consolation goal for the Golden Boys in the 95th minute, with a header that was virtually the last touch of the game, a cup run in this competition not to be for the home side.

Oh dear. Holebas tried his absolute best to regain possession for the Hornets, but his tired tackle is late, and the referee has not option but to show a second yellow.

Marco Silva pats him on the back as he leaves the field. He knows it was with the best of intentions, but now the Watford boss has a selection headache at left-back for Brighton's visit on Saturday.

Reid puts City ahead

Technical difficulties here prevented us from bringing you the bad news, but City are ahead at Vicarage Road courtesy of Bobby Reid's 67th minute goal.

RIcharlison came close a few moments ago to levelling for Watford, but his header came back of the base of the post. 1-2, 10 minutes left.

Hinds levels

Hinds turns expertly on the halfway line, and with the Hornets exposed drives towards goal and powers a straight shot inside Gomes' right post. 1-1.

Sebastian Prödl strides out of defence with the ball.

That was fast!

Hornets fans on Twitter were calling for a faster pace, and with Watford's first meaningful attack their increased tempo has paid off.

Hughes plays a one-two with substitute Success, then fires the ball into the feet of Capoue, who turns and smashes past Fielding via a small deflection. 1-0.

HALF-TIME: Watford 0-0 Bristol City

It's all square here as we head into the break, with few chances for either side.

Perhaps the best chance for Watford fell to the feet of Deeney, bearing down on goal, but a sliding recovery from Flint came in before he could really get the ball out from his feet.

At the other end Gomes has had little to do other than marshal his defence.

Both sides will need to improve after the break if they want to progress to the third round of the Carabao Cup.

8:21 PM - 36 MIN

Yellow card

Capoue takes one for the team as City look to break, tugging the shirt of Hinds and picking up a booking.

8:14 PM

The heavens have opened...

...hopefully the Bristol City defence will open up too.

It's absolutely lashing down at Vicarage Road.

8:10 PM

Amrabat holds off Kelly. The winger has been an outlet for the Hornets so far.

8:09 PM - 24 MIN

Quiet so far

There's not been much action so far, but Holebas and Mariappa have both put in dangerous crosses in the last few minutes - only some good aerial defending from the visitors has prevented an effort on goal.

7:56 PM - 11 MIN

Free-kick Robins

Kabasele takes down Eliasson as City break. He seemed to have got the ball, but as referee Tim Robinson gives a free-kick on the edge of the box, it's a slight surprise there's no booking for the Belgian. Comes to nothing, anyway.

7:52 PM - 8 MIN

First Shot

The Golden Boys play some patient possession football in and around the opposition area before the ball falls to Mariappa, whose shot flies wide of the target.

Not much to report in the opening exchanges here.

Despite making six changes to the starting line-up, the Golden Boys name a very strong side in tonight's second round tie against Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.

There's a debut for Will Hughes this evening as he makes his first start under Marco Silva following his arrival from Derby County earlier this summer.

Elsewhere Troy Deeney, Adrian Mariappa, Christian Kabasele, Étienne Capoue and Ben Watson all start as well, with the latter three having made substitute appearances against Bournemouth last Saturday.

All around me are familiar faces...

Keep an eye out around the ground this evening, as Keith Millen returns to watch two of his former sides.

He made 11 appearances for the Golden Boys in the League Cup (now rebranded to the Carabao Cup), in nearly six years at Watford.

Keith Millen celebrates victory in the 1999 Division 1 Playoff Final with Allan Smart.

ICYMI: Preview | Bristol City

Gregor MacGregor, of the Bristol Post, spoke to about tonight's opponents in the Carabao Cup second round.

Can we expect the Robins to ring the changes tomorrow night?
“Assistant manager Dean Holden spoke to the press today and said there’ll be changes. They’ve got a fairly strong squad and plenty of competition for places, so they’ll still field a very competitive side and want to come down and give it a real go. The players will be up for it. They’ve got decent players on the bench itching to start.”
