“I want us to fight in each game, have the same intensity and play each game better” - Mazzarri

Walter Mazzarri spoke to Sky Sports and BBC Match of the Day after the match:

"Today we played as a group in a different way. Some of the chances United had were only because of things we did wrong.

"We need to grow as a team altogether. Passing more and taking less touches on the ball. If we didn't do these things then we have a chance to get at least a point.

"I want us to fight in each game, have the same intensity and play each game better.

"We started very well. But during game kept ball too much in midfield. We lost ball too easily and created them chances. If it wasn't for our mistake for their second goal maybe we could have got a point.

The important thing is that performances are as they have been lately. Now we need to get players back to full condition and then we can have a really strong finish to our season."

“We learn from these occasions” - Gomes

Watford's goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes spoke to the broadcast media immediately after the final whistle:

"We had a chance to compete and we pushed much better in the second half. But if you come here and not 100 per cent then you will concede goals.

"I believe we lost game in first half. We could have avoided situations where I had to make saves. In the second half we were much better, but we didn't show our best in first half.

"We came here with possibility to get something but we didn't so we must focus forward now.

"We learn from these occasions. We have some important games coming up so some good things to learn from today.

"It's my job to be there and stop goals and I try to my best for the team.  I was in the starting eleven so I take my part of blame.

"We are still looking up the table. When we show up we can really play. That's the way we must approach the rest of the season."

4:51 PM - 90 MIN

FULL-TIME: Manchester United 2-0 Watford

It was not to be for the Hornets as they tried to overcome a Red Devils side who were unbeaten in 15 league games heading into the match.

That was not to say the visiting side did not have chances. The United defence was not as strong as Jose Mourinho would perhaps have liked, and had Janmaat put the ball into the back of the net from Niangs' cross or Zarate's free-kick crept in past the outstretched hand of De Gea it could have been a very different end to the game.

But on balance, the hosts deserved the result as they had a slew of missed chances in the first-half before eventually taking the lead through Mata in the 32nd minute - the Spaniard tucking home from close range.

Their second came midway through the second-half from Martial as he squeezed the ball in at the near post with United establishing their lead in an open game.

The Golden Boys tried to find a way back into the game but it was always going to be hard to come back from being two goals down.

Ironic cheers

Isaac Success is fouled in the middle of the pitch and the Watford fans jeer loudly as Bobby Madley awards a free-kick.

Success meanwhile has taken up the left-wing position while Janmaat drops to right-back in place of Cathcart.

Younes Kaboul plays a sweet in-swinging ball over the top of the United defence, and Deeney gathers the ball but can only shoot straight at De Gea. You can almost sense a Watford goal coming here.

Janmaat fires over

Niang repeats the feat down the right-hand side, and this time Janmaat is there but he gets the finish all wrong and shoots over the bar. It should have been 2-1.

Just moments previously Bobby Madley was not interested as Capoue is hauled down again on the edge of the area - the Watford fans definitely not happy about that one!

Zarate has become more of an influence on this game in the second-half causing problems for the home defence.

4:23 PM - 65 MIN

Flashed across

Niang beats Daley Blind down the right and drives a low ball across the face of goal but no-one was there for what would have been a tap-in.

4:19 PM

Gutting

Capoue lost the ball in midfield and as the home side went forward, Ibrahimovic slipped in Martial.

The young forward cut inside and saw the smallest of gaps at the near post, slotting the ball into the back of the net, with Gomes unsighted by his defence.

HALF-TIME: Manchester United 1-0 Watford

A flurry of spurned chances at both ends evenutally gave way to a deserved opener for the hosts.

But the Watford players - and Etienne Capoue in particular -  will feel aggrieved that Bobby Madley did not award a free-kick for what looked to be a foul on the Frenchman just outside the area.

The promise of the first 20 minutes has ebbed away but there are still 45 minutes to be played against a team who are allowing chances on goal too easily at home.

3:18 PM - 18 MIN

Great save

Paul Pogba forces Gomes to tip the ball away for a corner with a strike from distance, chances at both ends here.

3:17 PM - 17 MIN

Almost!

Jose Holebas drives down the left before lashing his effort towards the right side of goal, unluckily it curls just away from goal. So close for the Hornets.

Tom Cleverley is putting himself about on the Old Trafford pitch - no signs of any loyalty to his old club here.

Mazzarri pre-match

Watford Head Coach Walter Mazzarri spoke to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off:

"Last week everything went well for us. It will be difficult today but we will do everything possible to get a result.

"Manchester United are a completely different now [to when we last played them]. I knew that Mourinho would find his team. They are doing extremely well and are 15 unbeaten in the league - it's no surprise.

"I am satisfied at the moment. Our objective for now is to keep playing well from now until end of season."
