Zinckernagel: “We’ve Been Training Really Hard”

With just two weeks to go until the 2021/22 campaign begins, Philip Zinckernagel is looking forward to playing competitive matches again.

Reflecting on the five weeks of pre-season so far, Zinckernagel is happy with the progress he and the squad have made in preparation for the new season, but the Dane is relieved the season has almost begun.

“It’s been nice, it’s been tough,” said Zinckernagel. “We’ve had double sessions almost every day. I think we've been training really hard. Two weeks now until the Premier League is a relief, you can look forward and start thinking about the Premier League and playing real games again.”

Zinckernagel bagged a goal from midfield in a training ground friendly with Arsenal on Tuesday, and has enjoyed the tests his side have faced so far.

“It’s always more fun playing games than training, so it’s nice to be able to play,” he continued. “We’ve had a few games at home, one against Stevenage and one against Arsenal.

“It’s fun to play good teams but at the moment we are working on our physical states; you play 45 against Stevenage and the next day you play 45 again. You’re not feeling fresh all the time but it’s part of pre-season. It’s a good experience but hard work!”

Having joined the Hornets from Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt in January, Zinckernagel hadn’t experienced Vicarage Road with supporters until last weekend’s goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion.

“With the supporters in the stands there’s a big, big difference,” said the 26-year-old. “To have them there even for friendly matches is so much better, and you start feeling this. Soon we’ll be playing for points again in the Premier League. I’m looking forward to it.”
