Women: Ward In Latest Wales Squad

Helen Ward has been called up to Wales’ squad for their FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers later this month.

It’ll be a big week for the Welsh campaign, as they look to put themselves in a strong position to potentially qualify for the final tournament in Australia and New Zealand, in 2023.

They’ll be at home for the first fixture, as fourth-placed Greece make the trip to Llanelli on November 26.

That’ll be followed by a first v second encounter. Having picked up 10 points from a possible 12 so far, Wales are only two points behind a French side who currently have a 100 per cent record.

What is no doubt the biggest fixture in the group so far, will take place in Guingamp on November 30.

While it will be a difficult test against one of the best sides in the world, this isn’t unfamiliar territory for the Welsh.

In their previous World Cup qualification campaign, they secured an impressive point away in England, and they’ll be hoping they can do similar, or even better, across the channel.

As mentioned previously, they’ll go into the latest round of matches in good form, having won three out of four in the group.

The last game back in October saw them defeat Estonia 4-0, with Ward herself getting on the scoresheet in the second half.

It’s no surprise to anyone who watches the Golden Girls regularly that Wales’ record goalscorer is still adding to her tally at international level.

Now, she’ll want to help lead the team to a major tournament. The winner of each group will qualify, with second place enough to guarantee a play-off place.

The picture will start to look a little clearer after the latest international window finishes, but there’s no doubt that Wales have put themselves in a good spot to potentially make that goal a reality.
