Women: Promotion To Championship Confirmed!

By: Watford FC Staff

Watford FC Women will play in the FA Women’s Championship during the 2021/22 season, after The Football Association approved the club’s application for upward movement.

The promotion follows two curtailed FA Women’s National League seasons in which the Golden Girls were targeting promotion to the second tier, having accumulated 15 wins in their 19 league games played.

After the 2020/21 campaign was curtailed and declared incomplete in March, The FA invited teams to apply in their process of upward movement, via application and based on set criteria.

Head Coach Clinton Lancaster was pleased with the outcome, having seen his team knocking on the door of the Championship for two years.

“The initial feeling is ecstatic, I’m just over the moon and delighted,” said Lancaster. “It’s been a long time coming and the players and staff have had to be patient. We’re absolutely thrilled to have our application accepted, especially after everyone’s hard work over the last few years.”

Club captain Helen Ward also welcomed the news, believing the outcome is a result of a dedication to achieving promotion throughout the club, on and off the pitch.

“A lot of hard work has gone into this,” said the skipper. “Not only is it the players on the field trying to achieve promotion, but it’s off the pitch. We’ve put ourselves forward in a really good way to achieve this, so it’s a really nice feeling to know that everybody’s hard work has paid off.”

The club would like to thank The FA for granting the appeal as we now look forward to a busy summer ahead, preparing for our 2021/22 FA Women’s Championship campaign.
