Watford FC and the club’s Community Sports and Education Trust were represented by Little Green School at this year’s Premier League Primary Stars National Girls Football Tournament, hosted at Leeds United’s Elland Road Stadium.
They were one of 20 representative teams made up of primary school children who had completed the Premier League Primary Stars programme. The teams also represented 20 different Premier League, English Football League and National League clubs.
The tournament gave those taking part the opportunity to experience the life of a Premier League footballer for the day and compete under the watchful eye of Premier League and Women’s Super League match officials.
This year more than 14,500 girls representing more than 100 professional football clubs from across England and Wales competed for their chance to represent their respective clubs in the tournament, which shows the feat Little Green School achieved just by being involved in the national competition.
The team won both the local heats with other Hertfordshire and Harrow primary schools, hosted in the Dome at Watford FC’s training ground in London Colney, as well as the regional heats against other representative teams of professional clubs within their region.
School Sport Project Manager at Watford FC’s Community Trust, Lou Barry, said: “We were so proud of Little Green Primary and their performances at the Premier League Primary Stars National Girls Finals. They represented the club fantastically and should all be so proud of themselves.
“Although they didn’t win the trophy, they did get narrowly close to getting out of the group and put in some great performances along the way, in the local, regional, and national finals. At the Trust, we are now looking forward to the new academic year and engaging with even more schools within the Premier League Primary Stars programme.”
Premier League Primary Stars enables teachers to use resources across English, PSHE, PE and Maths, to support children to develop skills and values that are crucial to success in later life. Currently, 103 professional football clubs run in-classroom Premier League Primary Stars sessions in local partner schools.
The free programme also provides teachers and parents with downloadable resources across a range of curriculum subjects at Key Stage 1 (age 5-7) and Key Stage 2 (age 7-11), developed by teachers for teachers, and in collaboration with experts such as the National Literacy Trust.
More than 61,000 teachers have signed up to access free online national curriculum-linked resources.
