Legendary football commentator John Motson, who died early today at the age of 77, made many friends at Vicarage Road – the club’s stadium becoming something of a home-from-home on matchdays in recent years for him and wife Anne.

After his retirement in 2018, John – who lived in Hertfordshire – was a very regular visitor to the Watford FC Boardroom for first-team fixtures.

He enjoyed the Hornets’ hospitality and had a warm tale from his remarkable career for football folk of all generations delighted to share a little time with one of the game’s truly iconic figures.

“We were all very sad to learn of the news of John’s passing,” said Watford FC Chairman & CEO Scott Duxbury.

“Over the past two or three seasons, he came to nearly every home game of ours alongside his wife Anne; they’re two lovely people whom I and the other members of the Watford Board had become very fond of.

“Matchdays were a delight in John’s company. He was in great form as recently as earlier this month at the Blackburn Rovers home game.”

Scott added: “Our thoughts are with Anne and all of John’s family at this time.

“We’ll pay tribute to a special friend of the club at our next home fixture.”
