By: Watford FC Staff

Tom Dele-Bashiru spoke to watfordfc.com after his stoppage-time winner in the Hornets’ 2-1 victory over Chesterfield in the Emirates FA Cup.

The 24-year-old – who moved from right-back to his more natural midfield position in the second half – netted in the 95th minute to secure Watford’s place in the fourth-round draw.

Substitute Mileta Rajović had earlier cancelled out Joe Quigley’s first-half header.

Read what Dele-Bashiru had to say below…

We’re relieved. The first half wasn’t good enough from us, it was far below our standards. The gaffer wasn’t happy, we weren’t happy. At half-time he told us that it is in our hands, we need to do better in the second half and put in a good performance with more desire, more hunger, more urgency to win the game and get through to the next round.

In the first half, they made it difficult for us so fair play to them. They pressed high, tried to get in our faces, made it difficult and their fans were good as well, supporting them through the whole game. We knew we were far below our standards; we knew we would improve. In the second half we played with more urgency and that allowed us to push on and get the victory.

We were just honest with ourselves, knowing that we could improve, and we had a lot more gears to go through. In the second half we started with more urgency and that helped us perform.

It was a good goal. I saw the defender coming and thought I should fake the shot as I knew he would bite at it, and I was happy to score the goal.

It was a very important day [being Graham Taylor Matchday]. He’s a legend of this football club and he was an unbelievable manager, so it was an honour to score today. The fans were great, the fans were supportive. The first half was difficult and they were on our back a bit, but it’s normal. The second half was better and we felt the support, pushed on and got the victory.
