Player And Goal Of The Month Awards: September Voting Open

By: Watford FC Staff

The month of September has provided goals aplenty, VAR drama and several stand-out performers from both the Men’s and Women’s Watford sides.

Voting is now open for the Stake Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards, with three nominees for the best individual from September, and eight for the best strike from the last month.

Supporters can select their choice for the accolades by clicking HERE.

Voting closes at 9am on Saturday October 2, with the winners of both awards set to be announced during Saturday’s Hive Live pre-match show (1-1.45pm) before the trip to face Leeds United at Elland Road.

Trio Put Forward For POTM Prize

Three assists in September sees forward Joshua King nominated for the Stake Player of the Month gong.

King, who arrived in July, completed his first 90 minutes of the season in a 3-1 away win at Norwich City, where he provided for both of Ismaïla Sarr’s second-half goals. The duo combined a week later against Newcastle when King’s deft flick-on found the winger at the back post.

Sarr played every minute of Watford’s Premier League games in the month of September, scoring three times.

The 23-year-old netted for Senegal at the start of the month against Republic of the Congo and continued his goalscoring form at club level, finding the net in back-to-back games against Norwich and Newcastle.

At the other end of the pitch, Danny Rose played his first three Premier League games in a Watford shirt in September, and like Sarr, featured throughout.

Solid in defence and creative going forward, Rose impressed against former club Newcastle, making key tackles and interceptions.

If not for great saves and near misses in attack, Rose could have had a number of assists to his name already this season thanks to his long-range passing from left-back.

Eight Super Strikes Nominated For GOTM

Watford Women’s first goal at Vicarage Road this season was a terrific effort. Defender Anne Meiwald, who scored for England in the European Beach Soccer League final in the summer, showed more of her goalscoring talents against Liverpool, intercepting a long pass and breaking forward before firing from range into the top corner.

Helen Ward’s goal put Watford within touching distance of an equaliser in the same game with a powerful header from an accurate Rosie Kmita cross, also earning a nomination for Goal of the Month.

Adekite Fatuga-Dada scored her first goal of the FA Women’s Championship season a week later against Blackburn Rovers, and in style. The winger’s long-range free-kick curled around the Rovers defence and into the bottom corner.

The Men’s first away win of the season came at Carrow Road on September 18 against Norwich City. Emmanuel Dennis opened the scoring after just 17 minutes when Kiko Femenía delivered an impressive cross.

Dennis darted in ahead of Ozan Kabak to head home, and would surely have won a celebration of the month competition with the cartwheel and backflip that followed.

Both of Sarr’s second-half goals have also been nominated. Sarr made a run ahead of Grant Hanley to meet King’s pass and finished first time past Tim Krul for his first of the afternoon.

The second, initially ruled out by VAR for offside, was a composed side-foot effort after King’s shot was rebounded, with great work from Tom Cleverley to obtain possession.

Ashley Fletcher’s second goal of the season came in the Carabao Cup Third Round against Stoke City. Cucho Hernández’s shot from the edge of the box was saved by goalkeeper Adam Davies, but Fletcher showed quick reactions to keep the ball in play, backheeling skilfully to equalise.

Watford’s last goal of September came from a familiar source in Sarr against Newcastle. King’s flick-on header found Sarr, who powerfully headed into the top corner for his fourth goal of the season.
