Official: Cleverley Confirmed As Club Captain

Head Coach Rob Edwards yesterday confirmed to his players that Tom Cleverley is Watford FC’s new Club Captain.

“Tom is everything you want in a man - both as a professional footballer on the pitch and as a human being off the pitch,” Edwards said, paying a glowing tribute to Cleverley, who’s made more appearances for the Hornets than anyone in the current squad except longest-serving player Craig Cathcart.

“He has huge respect within our group of players and staff, and that stems from the way he conducts himself every single day.

“You couldn’t want for a better person to be leading our guys and it’s great for me to have such quality and experience in what’s a very important role.”

Delighted with the appointment, Cleverley himself said: “Watford is a club that I feel is ‘my club’, so it’s a massive honour for me - no question about that.

“I’m privileged that Rob has put his trust in me, and I’ve got no doubt in my mind that we can have a lot of success this season.”

Smiled Cleverley, recalling a brief stint in the role during last season until Moussa Sissoko arrived and was immediately appointed to replace him: “I hope it lasts a bit longer than last time!

“Seriously though, it’s a massive honour to take on this role.

“When I eventually retire and look back on my career, Watford’s going to have formed the largest chunk of that - and that’s why this club means so much to me.”
