Official: Buers Joins Academy

Watford FC is pleased to announce the signing of Freddie Buers, who has joined the academy on an 18-month deal.

The left-back came through the academy at Southend United and has most recently been playing for Kings Langley in the eighth tier of English football, before linking up with the Hornets’ Under-21 squad.

Buers - who has been on trial for the last two months - is delighted to finally get the deal over the line.

“I’m very happy – it has been a hard journey,” he said. “There is that added pressure given I’ve been on trial for two months, so that is a weight off my shoulders!

“Everyone has been really supportive. The whole club nature stood out. From the academy side of things, everyone is really together. You want that family aspect of it, especially coming in as a new player, even on my first day I was immediately a part of the squad, I didn’t feel out of place at all.

“I was at Southend from under-9s to under-16s, but then suffered with injuries so I went through the non-league route at Kings Langley.

“The toughness around the men’s side of things, the banter in the changing room, that side of it brings out a personality I have taken with me to Watford. Coming from non-league, it is a completely different ball game. Even the coaching, the defence positions, there is stuff you don’t get taught in non-league, so I have learnt so much.

“I try to emulate Gareth Bale at left-back, before he went to left-wing - he wasn’t too bad.

"I’m raw, quick, and I like to get up and down the wing, and get crosses in.”

Welcome to Watford, Freddie!
