News: Watford Draw Stevenage In Carabao Cup First Round

By: Watford FC Staff

The Hornets will take on Hertfordshire neighbours Stevenage in the first round of the 2023/24 Carabao Cup, with the match set to take place at the Lamex Stadium during the week commencing Monday August 7 (date and time to be confirmed).

The draw was conducted by Michael Dawson and Danny Cowley live on Sky Sports, following the release of the EFL league fixtures earlier on Thursday (June 22).

Watford last faced Stevenage in competitive action at the same stage of the Carabao Cup in 2014 - when a Lloyd Dyer goal secured a 1-0 win - and the Golden Boys will now once again make the short journey to the newly-promoted League One outfit as they begin their bid for cup success just days after kicking off in the Sky Bet Championship at Queens Park Rangers (Saturday August 5).

A disappointing home defeat to Milton Keynes Dons ended the Hornets’ Carabao Cup journey at the second-round stage last season, though they do have pedigree in the competition having reached the semi-finals in 1978/79 and 2004/05.

As a result of this cup draw, the club confirms that the previously scheduled pre-season friendly against Stevenage will no longer take place. Further pre-season updates will be announced in due course.
