Muñoz: “We Need To Stay Everyone Together”

Xisco Muñoz admitted Watford were far from their best at Kenilworth Road but stressed now is the time to come together and react positively, with four games remaining and promotion still in the Hornets' hands.

Watford lost for the first time in nine Championship matches with today’s 1-0 defeat to Luton Town but remain in the driving seat for a top two spot, as Brentford and Swansea City also dropped points.

“We’ve spoken about having 20 minutes to enjoy games and then moving on. Today we don’t have these 20 minutes, today we only have power for the next game,” said the Head Coach.

“We need to stay everyone together. Today is the day. We need to keep going with the same ambition, the same passion, the same power. We spoke about this, we knew we’d have difficult situations in the last games in the Championship and right now is the moment for everyone to stay together, to keep going, for everyone to believe in our important goal and for our team to continue with the same work.”

James Collins won the game with a 78th-minute penalty after a defensive mix-up between Achraf Lazaar and Daniel Bachmann. Kiko Femenía was then sent off for a second yellow card before Andre Gray was denied a late equaliser against his old club by a narrow offside call.

“I don’t know if it was a goal or not, but I never speak about referees,” said Muñoz. “Sometimes you have good things, sometimes there are mistakes, but it doesn’t matter.

“Today is only the day to stay together. We know it wasn’t our best performance but it’s important to start preparing for the next game.

“I’m disappointed about the game. The game was not easy for us today, but we are working very hard and I’m sure the next game we’ll have full power to try to take the three points.”

The attention now turns to Norwich City on Tuesday. The Canaries achieved promotion this afternoon and look almost certain for the title, but Watford will go to Carrow Road aiming to spoil the party and take another step towards securing second place, with Muñoz relishing the challenge.

“I had a big responsibility from the first day I was the Head Coach of Watford,” said the Spaniard.

“The players have worked very hard for the past three or four months, they work with passion, give their maximum in all the training sessions to get us into this situation.

“Now is the moment to believe in us. We know our responsibility, we also know there will be difficult moments until the final. But we are working hard, we’ll stay together and after we will see if we arrive in our amazing goal.”
