Muñoz: “The Supporters Will Be Proud”

Xisco Muñoz believes his side can improve even further despite beating Aston Villa 3-2 in the opening game of the season in front of a packed Vicarage Road.

The Hornets’ boss was extremely pleased with the performance of the Golden Boys, especially in the presence of supporters for the first time in a year-and-a-half.

“It was a very good day today,” Muñoz explained. “It was Graham Taylor’s day and to see our fans in our stadium was amazing. I’m very happy with the players after working hard for seven weeks.

“For me, it was my first game in the Premier League, and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Muñoz was happy to see how Ismaïla Sarr and Emmanuel Dennis worked together, after scoring the first two goals and combining neatly during the game.

“The most important thing is the team understands each other,” he continued.

“We tried to create space for (Emmanuel) Dennis and (Ismaïla) Sarr. It was a brilliant game as we could’ve scored more.

“We know how well he (Sarr) can play, and we know he is a top player. If he has space, he can beat anyone. I think (Ismaïla) Sarr, (Emmanuel) Dennis and (Ken) Sema understand how to attack the space, especially today.”

Turning his attention to the opposition, Muñoz added there is room to improve and that Aston Villa proved a tough adversary.

“We tried to close the space in behind because that is what Aston Villa attack,” Muñoz added.

“It’s important though not to forget about humility as we need to prepare for the next game. The Premier League is so difficult, and we need to learn lessons from the last 15 minutes.”

Muñoz explained, however, that this Watford side can continue to progress with their current attitude.

“We need to have the respect (for everyone),” he added. “We know the Premier League and we need to work very hard. We will try our best always. It was very good today, and the fans will enjoy it, but tomorrow we start the preparation for the next game.

“Humility and hard work every day will create the momentum. This is the only way in the Premier League to use our amazing talent.”
